THE FIRST NOEL Dopo essere stata tramandata oralmente per molte generazioni, "The First Noel" fu pubblicata per la prima volta, in una collezione di Christmas Carols nel 1833. L'origine del titolo di questo canto tradizionale è controverso: secondo alcuni non si tratterebbe del "noel" di origine francese, bensi' di una contrazione di "Now all is well" che è quindi divenuto "Now well," e abbreviato in "Nowell". In quella fredda notte in pieno inverno l’angelo chiamò per primi i poveri pastori, che sdraiati nei campi, custodivano le loro greggi. Guardarono in alto e videro una stella che brillava lontano ad Oriente, che illuminava con grande luce la terra. La stella indicava il luogo dove riposava Gesù. E lì entrarono i Re Magi e si inginocchiarono pieni di riverenza offrendo alla sua presenza oro, mirra e incenso. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, è nato il re d’Israele.
