FOR IRLAND I'D NOT TELL HER NAME

Ar Eireann Ni Neosainn Ce hi è una canzone d'amore dolcissima, la cui origine potrebbe essere molto antica e ci sono delle controverse attribuzioni tra Irlanda e Scozia. La melodia richiama un'antica aria anglo scozzese "Tweedside" o "The Banks of the Tweed" del 1733 così i Boys of the Lough la annoverano tra le Border songs.

"It is the tune Tweedside’, first published in the Orpheus Caledonius Collection in 1733… It was taken into the Irish tradition and combined with a text in Irish in praise of the river Lee, to give the well known ‘Abha na Laoi’ (The River Lee’)… The tune is now better known as ‘Ar Éirinn ní Neosfainn Cé Hí’ (‘For Ireland I would not tell her Name’), with its eighteenth-century text from the Maigue school of poets from Limerick… In this version the air, with its decorations, has been finally put into what traditional musicians of today would recognise as an acceptable Irish mould" (tratto da "Traditional music in Ireland" di Tomás Ó Canainn

Alcuni attribuiscono la melodia al compositore piemontese David Rizzio (o Riccio) protégé della regina di Scozia vedi.

La fonte data dalle pubblicazioni testuali (in gaelico irlandese) si rifanno a E. Walsh "Irish Popular Song" 1847:"Walsh says the name of the author is unknown, but he was likely a native of Kerry, as the song was very popular there. Tradition attributes it to a young man who fell in love with his brother's affianced bride. Dr. Joyce quotes O'Curry's authority for the statement that the song was written about 1810 by Finneen, or Florence, Scannell, a Kerry schoolmaster."

GUIDA ALL'ASCOLTO

Scritta in gaelico probabilmente nel 1800 su di una melodia del secolo precedente, la canzone è stata successivamente tradotta metricamente in inglese in varie versioni. Qualcuno si è dato la pena di dare una spiegazione al testo: un giovane si è innamorato di una ragazza ma è troppo povero per poterla mantenere decorosamente e troppo timido per farsi comunque avanti, si reca all'estero per cercare la fortuna e quando ritorna trova la donna sposata con suo fratello.
