Melodia tradizionale irlandese

"I tell me ma" è una filastrocca per bambini molto popolare, diffusa in varie parti d'Inghilterra, anche con il nome di "The Belle of Belfast City" e "Boys Won’t Leave the Girls Alone".

IL GIOCO

In "The Traditional Games of England, Scotland and Wales" -1894 Alice B Gomme descrive il gioco diffuso in tutto il Regno Unito in epoca ottocentesca associato alla filastrocca (collezionata anche per frammenti in molte raccolte di nursery rhymes) "The Wind"; il gioco praticato dai ragazzi nella fase adolescenziale, come una specie di iniziazione al corteggiamento, si canta in cerchio con un ragazzo o una ragazza al centro, alla domanda "mi vuoi dire chi è" la persona al centro dice il nome di uno dei componenti del gruppo, che si mette a sua volta nel centro fino allo scambio del posto (e a volte del bacio).

Leslie Daiken invece nel suo "Children's Games Throughout the Year" -1949 si riferisce a una versione della filastrocca come collezionata a Belfast che veniva cantata per cadenzare il salto alla corda.

Nel documentario "The Singing Street: children playing in Edinburgh" (in Archive Scottish Screen) sono stati ripresi, ad Edimburgo, i giochi di strada dei bambini del dopoguerra con i relativi canti.

4) parlour è un termine anglo-normanno per indicare il soggiorno

"I tell me ma" compare in molte collezioni musicali di inizio 900 e probabilmente è diventata popolare come melodia irlandese perchè riproposta dai Dubliners negli anni '60. Come sempre è estenuante perdersi in disquisizioni sulle origini inglesi, irlandesi o scozzesi di un brano così popolare!

Il ritmo è vivace, quasi una polka, e più velocemente si canta più il testo diventa uno scioglilingua. Per quanto esistano diverse varianti locali, le versioni testuali registrate dai musicisti folk sono tutte uguali, cambiando solo il nome della città!
